San Carlos Roofing has been working in Fort Myers, North Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, Cape Coral, Estero, Bonita Springs, Naples, Lee County, and Collier County for many years.  Starting as a sole proprietorship in 1987 and then incorporation in 2003 as San Carlos Roofing Company.

My Father-in-Law, John Novak, was the first in a long line of our family’s roofers.  He started out as a helper for a roofer named Frank Palumbo.  This was as close to an apprenticeship as it came to for tradesmen back in the late 70’s.  After a while, John’s Roofing, was created as he, like many others, started their own roofing companies.  Before cell phones, his wife Sue, daughter, and son would answer the house phone taking messages and scheduling work while John estimated and did the repairs and reroofs himself.  He started with repairing shingle roofs and tile roofs working his way up to full reroofs on shingle, metal, and tile roofs.

While Fort Myers boomed, John needed more and more help calling on local people and family members that were relocating to this area.  Lucky for John, his wife, Sue, was from a large family with many brothers.  As each brother would move to the area, they would join him on the roof.  The company swelled in size, eventually splitting into two more roofing companies.  One of these roofing companies to arise out of John’s Roofing was San Carlos Roofing.  When faced with the many trials and rigors of being a roofer, Uncle Paul, the original owner and founder of San Carlos Roofing, would lament “why couldn’t John have been a banker?”

With the advent of a second and larger housing boom coupled with the first of several hurricanes that hit the area after 40 years of peaceful weather and near misses, a much larger need for roofing was created.  Uncle Paul told me that he needed help with estimates and management.  I started working at San Carlos Roofing after Hurricane Charlie in the Fall of 2004.  It was fast growth up until 2008 when the housing, tech, and banking bubbles all popped at the same time dragging us down into the Great Recession.  …And if you want to know how bad it was for our area, the President of the United States came to use the City of Fort Myers as a backdrop to tell everyone how bad things were for us as a nation during one of his national addresses.  I believe we all aged ten years during that time as we scraped by. 

One upside was that we focused on the many facets of repair work because there was very little money for complete reroofs.  Through all of the repairs that we were doing, we found that many of the old ways of roof installations that were commonplace actually were not the best way to do it.  This difficult time during the recession allowed us to hone our skills as not only roofing repairers but to install roofs in a different way that have been far more long lasting and successful installations, even during the subsequent hurricanes.  Ultimately, we created a superior roofing product.

After years of hardships, our area and San Carlos Roofing were able to weather the recession and get back to regular work.  We had a slow, steady climb back to a solid business with no debts.  It was two years after Hurricane Irma, during the pandemic that my wife and I were able to purchase the company, still keeping it within the family.

We are now reroofing many of the same homes that we did when I first came on in 2004.  We have three dedicated repair crews, a shingle/metal reroof crew, and a shingle/tile reroof crew.  It is very nice that our neighbors, co-workers, suppliers, and business relations have stayed with us over all of these years.  It is also great that I am working with four of the same men that I started with in 2004. 

Our repair crews have over 100 years of combined roofing experience at San Carlos Roofing, keeping the quality of our repairs high while keeping our call backs low.  Our repairs include:  shingle, tile, metal, and flat-roof repairs.  Our reroof crews have been with us since 2012 and 2018, respectively.  They excel in shingle, tile, metal, and flat-roof installations.

We are still a “Mom and Pop Shop” that will not only do the smallest of repairs but also the largest of reroofs.  It is an honor for our family and our roofing family to work here in Southwest Florida continuing to serve our area, our neighbors, and our home since 1987.
